Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who served in the military in conflicts that took place after September 11, 2001.
- People who have been formally diagnosed with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) linked to combat experiences in those post-9/11 conflicts, based on a specific clinical assessment called the CAPS-5.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently enrolled in another experimental treatment for PTSD or are currently receiving trauma-focused therapy.
- People whose traumatic experience happened within the last 3 months before the pre-enrollment assessment.
- People with a history of epilepsy, seizures, or a significant head injury.
- People with any neurological condition that may raise the risk of having a seizure.
- People who have or have had a brain tumor.
- People who have had a moderate to severe problem with alcohol or drug use in the last 3 months, or whose substance use puts them at increased risk or causes significant problems in daily life.
- People who have had a stroke or have abnormal blood vessels in the brain.
- People diagnosed with dementia.
- People diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, or multiple sclerosis.
- People assessed as being at high risk of suicide.
- People with a lifetime history of a psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder.
- People who are unable to stop taking a medication that significantly lowers the threshold for seizures.
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding.
- People who have metal fragments or metal objects in or near their head that cannot be safely removed.
- People with a history of severe traumatic brain injury or who are considered at high risk for seizures (confirm with trial site for full details on how this is assessed).
- People who do not speak English, as the screening forms and tests are only available in English.
- People with a cardiac pacemaker or any implanted medication pump that could increase the risk from the treatment used in this trial (called rTMS).
- People with any current medical condition that could make it unsafe to receive TMS treatment (confirm with trial site).
- People using prescription medications or illegal substances that lower the seizure threshold.
- People who have previously received rTMS treatment.
