Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People with advanced cervical cancer (Stage 3B to 4A) that has been assessed by doctors as not suitable for a full course of curative radiotherapy or chemotherapy-with-radiation, for one of these specific reasons:
    • The tumour is very large and has spread deeply into the pelvic area in a way that makes curative treatment not possible (sometimes called "frozen pelvis")
    • There is an abnormal opening (fistula) larger than 2x2 cm connecting the tumour to the bladder or rectum, making curative treatment not possible, and surgery to remove the pelvis is also not an option
    • Kidney function is significantly reduced (a specific blood test result above a certain level), and the medical team has decided that a procedure to redirect urine flow is not appropriate given the person's overall condition
    • In all cases, two specialist radiation oncologists must agree that treatment aimed at comfort rather than cure is the appropriate approach
  • People experiencing moderate to severe pain, rated 4 or higher on a standard 0–10 pain scale
  • People whose doctors estimate their life expectancy is less than 12 months
  • People with Stage 4B cervical cancer with the disease extent described above, where chemotherapy is not possible due to poor kidney function or concerns about how well it would be tolerated

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body and who need systemic (whole-body) therapy as the first treatment
  • People who have a retroviral disease (such as HIV) (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are unlikely to attend follow-up appointments
  • People whose doctors estimate their life expectancy is less than 3 months
