Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children and teenagers between 8 and 18 years of age
- People who have not previously had radiation treatment to the brain
- People who are able to complete repeated thinking and memory tests, each lasting around one hour
- People whose corrected vision (with glasses or contacts if needed) is at least 80% of normal, or who have no noticeable problems with their vision
- People whose hearing (with aids if needed) is not significantly impaired, or who have no noticeable hearing problems
- People who are able to attend follow-up appointments over time
- People whose parent or legal guardian (or the patient themselves, where appropriate) has provided written consent to take part
- People who have a primary brain tumour (a tumour that started in the brain, not one that spread from elsewhere in the body)
- People whose treatment is aimed at curing the tumour or managing it over the long term
- People with a life expectancy of more than 3 years
- For the radiation group specifically: people for whom proton therapy is planned, with a local radiation dose of at least 40 Gy(RBE) (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People younger than 8 or older than 18 years of age
- People whose brain tumour has spread to the brain from a cancer that started somewhere else in the body
- People who are receiving chemotherapy delivered directly into the fluid surrounding the spine or brain
- People whose treatment is purely aimed at comfort rather than controlling the tumour long-term
- People who are not able to complete repeated thinking and memory tests lasting around one hour each
- People with ongoing (chronic) illnesses that could affect the results of brain wave (EEG) or thinking and memory tests
- People who are not able to attend follow-up appointments
- People for whom written consent has not been provided by the patient, parent, or legal guardian
- People already taking part in another intervention study whose procedures conflict with this trial
