Who might be able to join this trial:

• To meet the Metabolic Syndrome requirement, a person must have at least three of the following: a large waist measurement (over 40 inches for men, over 35 inches for women); high fasting blood triglycerides (above 150 mg/dL); low "good" (HDL) cholesterol (below 40 mg/dL for men or below 50 mg/dL for women); blood pressure above 130/85 mmHg; or high fasting blood sugar (above 110 mg/dL) or a specific blood sugar level recorded two hours after a sugar drink (140–200 mg/dL).

Who may not be able to join:

• People who already do regular endurance exercise (more than 20 minutes per day, more than one day per week) may not be eligible.
• Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have not had regular menstrual cycles over the past year, may not be eligible.
• People taking medications that may affect blood flow or circulation may not be eligible.
• People taking anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) or antidepressants known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may not be eligible.
• People who currently smoke or use chewing tobacco may not be eligible.
• People with diabetes (fasting blood sugar above 125 mg/dL) may not be eligible.
• People with high blood pressure above 160/95 mmHg may not be eligible.
• People with heart failure, chest pain (angina), or poor circulation in the limbs may not be eligible.
• People whose heart test (ECG) shows serious irregular heartbeats or signs of reduced blood flow to the heart at rest or during exercise may not be eligible.
• People with chronic infections, stroke-related paralysis, advanced Parkinson's Disease, severe rheumatoid arthritis, or serious bone or joint problems that would prevent them from exercising may not be eligible.
• People who have been taking antioxidant, herbal, or vitamin supplements within the two weeks before the study begins may not be eligible.
• People who consume caffeine on the day of any experiment session may not be eligible.
• People whose weight changes by more than 5% during the training program may not be able to continue in the trial.
• People whose attendance at exercise sessions falls below 90% of the required sessions or total exercise time may not be able to continue in the trial.
