Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with a flare-up of a chronic lung condition (AECOPD):
- People whose blood tests during their hospital stay show that carbon dioxide levels are too high and the blood has become too acidic, whether or not they are already using a breathing support mask
- People who need extra oxygen, or whose blood oxygen levels are low even on a small amount of oxygen delivered through a mask or nasal tubes
- People receiving oxygen through high-flow nasal tubes at a flow rate of 30 litres per minute or less
For people recovering from weight-loss (bariatric) surgery:
- People who were already using a CPAP machine before their surgery due to a confirmed diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep)
- People who have both obstructive sleep apnea and a condition where excess weight causes chronically low oxygen levels during sleep (obesity hypoventilation syndrome)
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- People who are pregnant
- People whose breathing difficulties are severe enough to require constant use of a breathing support mask or CPAP machine
- People whose level of consciousness is significantly reduced, or who are experiencing severe agitation, confusion, or dementia that would make using a breathing mask difficult
- People for whom a breathing support mask is not medically safe — for example, those needing an emergency breathing tube inserted, those with a collapsed lung, or those who have recently had surgery on their oesophagus (food pipe)
- People who have unstable blood pressure or heart function requiring increasing levels of medication to keep the heart and circulation working at the start of the study
- People who do not wish to give their consent to participate
Note: This trial aims to include a small number of participants — five people in each group.
