Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People diagnosed with a specific type of throat cancer (squamous cell cancer of the oropharynx) that tests positive for a protein called p16
  • People whose cancer is at a certain stage — classified as Stage III or Stage IVa under a standard cancer staging system (confirm with trial site for exact stage details)
  • People who have not yet received any treatment for this cancer
  • People with no sign that the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body
  • People whose overall health is considered good enough for surgery, and whose tumour a surgeon has assessed as removable through the mouth with clear margins
  • People aged over 18 years
  • People with a general health and activity level above a certain threshold, as measured by standard medical scoring tools (confirm with trial site)
  • People whose blood counts and kidney function meet specific minimum levels (confirm with trial site for exact values)
  • People who have signed the study consent form
  • People with no other cancers in the past 5 years, except for certain common skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin)
  • People who agree to use effective contraception during the study; women who could become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test and must not be breastfeeding

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with a more advanced stage of cancer (T4) that cannot be removed without removing an organ
  • People whose tumour tests negative for the p16 protein
  • People with a more advanced level of lymph node involvement, classified as N3 or Stage IVB
  • People with 5 or more cancerous lymph nodes in the neck at the time of diagnosis
  • People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body (Stage IVC)
  • People whose scans show the cancer has clearly broken out of the lymph node walls
  • People whose anatomy does not allow the surgical approach through the mouth
  • People who have previously had a head or neck cancer at any time (other than certain skin cancers)
  • People with a second cancer currently present, or a history of cancer within the past 5 years (with some exceptions for certain skin cancers or an early-stage cervical cancer that was fully treated)
  • People with pre-existing nerve damage, even at a mild level
  • People who have previously been treated with certain chemotherapy drugs called Taxanes or Cisplatin
  • People with an active infection at the time of enrolment
  • People with other serious health conditions that could interfere with treatment or follow-up, or who are not able to give informed consent
  • People currently taking part in another clinical trial involving an investigational treatment
