Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People with one to three brain metastases (tumours that have spread to the brain), each smaller than 3 cm across, whether the tumour is still present or the area has been surgically removed
- People who are reasonably well and able to carry out daily activities, with only mild or moderate symptoms (a health score of 0, 1, or 2 on a standard scale used by doctors)
- People who are able to answer questions and follow instructions during memory and thinking tests
- People whose doctors estimate they have a life expectancy of more than 6 months
- People whose cancer has been confirmed by a laboratory test from a tumour sample taken from the original cancer site (such as lung, breast, or prostate) or from another affected area
- People who are willing and able to have brain MRI scans
- People who are able to give their informed consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- Women who could become pregnant but are unwilling to use adequate contraception during the trial
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan with contrast dye
- People whose tumour is growing directly into a sensitive brain area that the treatment is designed to protect (confirm with trial site)
- People who are planned to receive chemotherapy on the same day as the radiation treatment
- People who have previously had whole-brain radiation therapy
- People whose cancer has spread across the lining of the brain and spinal cord (known as leptomeningeal metastases)
- People whose brain metastases originated from germ cell tumours, small cell carcinoma, or primary central nervous system lymphoma
