Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 16 and 65 years old (any sex)
- You have been diagnosed with obesity based on World Health Organization guidelines for Asian populations, and you are already scheduled to have weight-loss (bariatric) surgery at one of the participating hospitals
- You have been found to have fat build-up in your liver, confirmed either by an imaging scan (such as an ultrasound or MRI) or by a tissue sample taken during surgery (this applies to the Base-NAFLD group)
- You have been diagnosed with a more advanced form of liver disease related to fat build-up (called NASH), confirmed by a liver tissue sample showing a certain level of inflammation and scarring (this applies to the Base-NASH group — confirm details with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have had any type of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery in the past
- You have a history of heavy alcohol use in the past 12 months (more than 30g per day for men, or more than 20g per day for women)
- You have taken certain medications, including amiodarone, methotrexate, tamoxifen, or long-term steroid medicines (glucocorticoids)
- You have certain specific medical conditions that can cause fat in the liver, such as a particular type of hepatitis C infection, Wilson's disease, autoimmune hepatitis, or coeliac disease, among others (confirm full list with trial site)
- You have had major surgery on your stomach or bowel in the past
- You have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, cancer
- You have a medical or mental health condition that is not well controlled
