Who might be able to join this trial:
For healthy participants (without sickle cell disease):
- You are between 4 and 21 years old
- You are able to have an MRI scan without needing sedation (sleep medicine)
- You are not currently pregnant
- You do not have a serious mental health diagnosis (the trial team will decide what counts as serious)
- You have never been diagnosed with epilepsy
- You have never had a stroke or any disease affecting blood vessels in the brain
- You may get occasional headaches, as long as you are not taking a daily medication to prevent them
- You are not taking blood vessel-widening medications, such as sildenafil or verapamil
For participants with Sickle Cell Anemia:
- You are between 4 and 21 years old
- You have a specific type of sickle cell disease (called Hb SS or SBeta-thalassemia — confirm with trial site if unsure which type you have)
- You are able to have an MRI scan without needing sedation (sleep medicine)
- You are not currently pregnant
- You are not taking blood vessel-widening medications, such as sildenafil or verapamil
- You have no known damage or disease affecting your blood vessels
Who may not be able to join:
- Anyone under 4 or over 21 years old
- Anyone who needs sedation to have an MRI scan
- Anyone who is currently pregnant
- Anyone taking daily medication to prevent headaches (healthy participants only)
- Anyone taking blood vessel-widening medications such as sildenafil or verapamil
- Anyone with known blood vessel damage or disease (sickle cell participants only)
- Anyone with a serious mental health diagnosis (healthy participants only)
- Anyone with a history of epilepsy (healthy participants only)
- Anyone who has had a stroke or brain blood vessel disease (healthy participants only)
