Who might be able to join this trial:
Group 1 (Inflammatory Bowel Disease):
- People who have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
- People who have either tried biologic treatments and they did not work, or who have never tried biologic treatments
- People whose condition means a doctor considers them suitable for a type of treatment called anti-TNF therapy
Group 2 (Joint Conditions):
- People who have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis
- People who are currently receiving a type of medication called an anti-TNF antibody therapy at the time of joining the trial
Group 3 (Comparison Group):
- People whose colon lining appears normal on camera examination (endoscopy)
- People who do not have inflammatory bowel disease
Who may not be able to join:
- People rated as having very high anaesthetic risk (a medical classification called ASA Class 4 or higher)
- People with a history of bleeding disorders or problems with blood clotting
- People who have had a stroke or a temporary stroke-like episode within the last 6 months
- People who are pregnant
- People taking blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications, except for low-dose aspirin
- People currently taking steroid medications or metformin
- People who are HIV positive
- People who are currently incarcerated
- People who have had their entire large bowel and rectum surgically removed
- People who have received chemotherapy (systemic) within the last 18 months
- People with another serious illness that is not currently under control
