Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 10 to 18 years, of any gender
- People with obesity, meaning a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for their age and gender
- People who are willing to keep their current diet and lifestyle the same for the whole time they are in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently misusing substances such as drugs or alcohol
- People who are taking prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or dietary or herbal supplements that could affect body weight, if the dose was changed in the three months before the study starts or if a dose increase is planned during the 18-week study period
- People who have lost more than 5 kilograms (about 11 pounds) of body weight in the past three months
- People who follow a non-standard diet, such as Paleo, Atkins, raw food, or macrobiotic diets
- People who have heart or cardiovascular disease
- People who have a prolonged QT interval, which is an irregularity detected on a heart tracing test (confirm with trial site)
- People who have chronic inflammatory bowel disease or other ongoing inflammatory conditions
- People who have epilepsy
- People whose thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level is more than 2.5 times the upper limit of the normal range
- People whose liver enzyme levels (ALT or AST) are more than 2.5 times the upper limit of the normal range
- People whose creatinine level (a measure of kidney function) is above 1.5 mg/dl
- People who have low sodium levels in their blood (hyponatremia)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or people who are female and sexually active but unwilling to use a non-estrogen-based form of contraception throughout the study
- People who cannot have an MRI scan, for example due to having a pacemaker or surgical clips in the brain
- People who weigh more than 450 pounds (approximately 204 kilograms), due to the weight limits of the MRI and body composition scanning equipment used in the study
- People who have Type 1 Diabetes, or Type 2 Diabetes with an HbA1c level above 8%
- People who have an active eating disorder
