Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a man or a woman who has not yet gone through menopause
- You are between 18 and 42 years old
- Your body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) falls roughly between 23 and 35
- You are willing to drink a special type of water (called deuterium-labeled water) every day for 8 weeks
- You are willing to be randomly placed into one of two groups in the study
- If you are a woman and not using hormonal birth control (such as the pill, ring, injection, or implant), you are willing to use another reliable method to prevent pregnancy for the entire study
- You are willing to follow all study instructions and attend all required appointments
- You agree to keep your exercise and physical activity at the same level throughout the study

Who may not be able to join:
- Your weight has gone up or down by about 5% or more in the last 3 months
- You have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, or your fasting blood sugar level is above 110 mg/dL
- Your blood pressure is consistently above 140/90
- You have a serious disease affecting a major organ such as your heart, kidneys, lungs, thyroid, or liver, or you have abnormal liver test results that the study doctor considers significant
- You have reported testing positive for HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C
- You have ever had or currently have an eating disorder
- You regularly take certain medications, including steroids, beta-blockers, antipsychotics, or other medicines known to significantly affect weight (confirm with trial site)
- You regularly take prescription or over-the-counter weight loss medications
- You have been taking antidepressant medication for less than 3 months
- You currently smoke or use tobacco products and cannot stop during the in-person study visits
- You have previously had weight-loss (bariatric) surgery or other surgery for obesity
- You have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 5 years (certain minor skin cancers may be acceptable — confirm with trial site)
- You are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months
- You have had a full or partial hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus)
- You have been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- You have been diagnosed with a psychotic condition
