Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer) that started in the lining of the mouth
- People who have had surgery to remove the tumour, including removal of nearby lymph nodes on the same side of the neck
- People who are planned to receive radiation therapy (with or without chemotherapy) after surgery, targeting the tumour area, the treated side of the neck, and the opposite side of the neck
- People aged 18 or older
- People with a general health status rated as reasonably functional (confirm with trial site)
- People who are able and willing to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose main treatment plan is radiation therapy alone or with chemotherapy, without surgery first
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the head or neck area
- People who test positive for HIV (types 1 or 2), hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or syphilis
- People who have a condition known to affect how the salivary glands work, such as Sjögren's syndrome
- People with a known allergy to mice or to the antibiotic gentamicin
- People who have had another type of cancer in the past five years, with the exception of certain skin cancers (basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin) or early-stage cervical cancer (in situ)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of joining
