Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 16 to 65 years who have no known vascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, or obesity

  • Control group (Phase 3): People who have been found to have a PFO by chance, with no neurological or other related symptoms

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose stroke, mini-stroke (TIA), or migraines appear to have a cause other than the PFO
  • People who have had a stroke or mini-stroke within the past one month
  • People who have an enlarged heart or a heart that is not functioning properly
  • People who have other structural problems or diseases affecting the heart
  • People who have narrowing or disease in the carotid arteries (neck arteries) or the coronary arteries (heart arteries)
  • People who have a blood clot in a deep vein (deep vein thrombosis) or in the lungs (pulmonary embolism)
  • People who have an implanted cardiac device, such as a pacemaker
  • People whose blood has been found to clot too easily (hypercoagulable state)
  • People who are allergic to contrast dye used in medical imaging
  • People whose heart scan shows a clot, abnormal growth, tumour, or tissue growth inside the heart
  • People who have an active heart infection (endocarditis) or another active infection
