Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are 20 years of age or older at the time of screening.
• People who have chronic kidney disease with kidney function and protein-in-urine levels within a specific range, and whose kidney function has been stable for at least 30 days before joining the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose kidney function has dropped below a certain low level, as measured by a specific calculation called the MDRD equation.
• People who are severely malnourished, shown by a very low level of a protein called albumin in their blood.
• People who have severe anaemia or active bleeding in their digestive tract, with very low haemoglobin (the substance in blood that carries oxygen).
• People who have a peptic ulcer, swollen veins in the oesophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach), a blocked bowel, or who are not able to eat or drink.
• People who have previously had surgery on any part of their digestive system.
• People who have chronic constipation, meaning they regularly have fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, experience straining, hard stools, a feeling of incomplete emptying, or are unable to pass stool — unless regular use of laxatives taken by mouth is able to produce bowel movements, in which case this condition alone would not prevent joining.
• People who have had a major bleeding episode requiring a blood transfusion during their current hospital admission.
• People who have been diagnosed — either by biopsy or by a doctor's clinical assessment — with advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis) classified as Child-Pugh grade B or C.
• People who have received a transplant of a solid organ (such as a kidney or liver) or blood-forming cells.
• People whose kidneys are producing very little urine, defined as less than 500 mL per day.
• People with evidence of a blockage causing kidney injury, or with polycystic kidney disease (a genetic condition causing cysts on the kidneys).
• People who have taken antibiotics or probiotics in the two weeks before joining the trial, or who would need to take them during the follow-up period.
• People who have been diagnosed with cancer at any point in the five years before screening.
