Who might be able to join this trial:

• People diagnosed with a specific type of cervical cancer — either squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or adenosquamous carcinoma — at certain stages of the disease (FIGO stages IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, or certain IIIC1 cases)
• People with stage IIIB disease where kidney swelling (hydronephrosis) is present but kidney function remains at an acceptable level
• People with stage IIIC1 disease where fewer than 3 lymph nodes are affected, each smaller than 3cm, and the cancer has not spread to a specific group of lymph nodes called the common iliac chain
• People whose treating doctor has determined they are suitable for a full course of chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy, followed by a type of internal radiation called brachytherapy

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose kidneys are not filtering blood well enough (creatinine clearance below 30ml/min)
• People with a cervical cancer type other than the three listed above
• People whose treatment plan would require radiation to lymph nodes near the main abdominal artery (para-aortic lymph nodes)
• People with inflammatory bowel disease
• People with connective tissue disorders (such as lupus or scleroderma — confirm with trial site)
• People who have previously received radiation therapy to the pelvic area
• People with very early stage (FIGO IA) or advanced stage (FIGO IV) cervical cancer
• People with a low general health and activity level, rated above 2 on a standard medical scale (ECOG performance status)
• People who have previously had their uterus removed (hysterectomy)
