Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 60 years of age or older
  • You have been diagnosed through a biopsy with a type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, located in the mouth, throat, or upper part of the voice box area
  • Your cancer is at a certain advanced stage, as confirmed by your doctor using a standard staging system (confirm with trial site)
  • You have one main tumor that doctors can inject medication directly into
  • You are not suitable for a standard chemotherapy drug called platinum-based chemotherapy during radiation, due to at least one of the following reasons: reduced kidney function, hearing loss or ringing in the ears (grade 2 or above), nerve damage in your hands or feet (grade 2 or above), a certain level of heart failure, or being aged 70–74 with a specific health assessment score, or being 75 years old or older (confirm with trial site)
  • You are generally able to carry out daily activities with little to no limitation (as rated by your doctor)
  • Your doctor expects you to live at least 6 months or more

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your cancer is located in certain other areas, such as the back of the nose, sinus, salivary glands, or thyroid, or it is not squamous cell carcinoma, or its origin cannot be identified
  • Your cancer is at an earlier or more spread-out stage than required (confirm with trial site)
  • Your head and neck cancer has come back after already being treated with surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy
  • You have had or currently have another cancer within the last 2 years that could affect how the trial results are measured
  • You currently have an active infection that requires antibiotic or similar treatment within 2 weeks of joining the trial
