Who might be able to join this trial:
For the new TB testing study:
- You are 12 years old or older and are not currently staying in a hospital
- You have had a cough lasting 2 weeks or longer, OR you have a risk factor for TB (such as being HIV-positive, having been in close contact with someone who had TB, or having worked in a mine) AND you have tested positive on a TB screening tool
- If you are HIV-positive, your screening result must show a specific protein level in your blood (CRP above 5 mg/dL) or an abnormal chest X-ray (confirm with trial site)
- If you had close contact with a TB patient or worked in a mine, you must have had an abnormal chest X-ray
- You live within 20km (about 12 miles) of the study site and are willing to come back for follow-up visits
For the drug-resistance testing study:
- You are 12 years old or older and have already tested positive for TB and for resistance to a key TB medication (rifampicin), based on routine tests
- You are able to provide at least two sputum (mucus) samples of at least 3mL each within one day of joining the study
For the health worker usability study:
- You are a health worker aged 18 or older who is involved in routine TB testing at one of the study clinics
Who may not be able to join:
For the new TB testing study:
- You finished treatment for TB (active or latent/inactive) within the last 12 months
- You have taken any antibiotic that can affect TB bacteria — including a type called fluoroquinolones — for any reason, within the last 2 weeks
- You live more than 20km from the study site, or you are not willing to come back for follow-up visits
- You are not willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
For the drug-resistance testing study:
- Your sputum (mucus) culture samples at the start of the study all come back negative or unusable
- You are unable to provide at least two sputum samples of 3mL each within one day of joining
- You are not willing or able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
For the health worker usability study:
- You are not willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
