Tuberculosis
Plain English clinical trial information, updated daily from ClinicalTrials.gov and public government registries. Not medical advice.
How these figures are counted
- Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
- Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
- Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
- Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Tuberculosis (TB)
Tuberculosis, often called TB, is an infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It most commonly affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, kidneys, spine, or brain. TB spreads through the air when a person with active TB in their lungs coughs, sneezes, or speaks, and someone nearby breathes in those tiny droplets. It is important to know that not everyone who is exposed to TB bacteria becomes unwell. Some people develop what is called latent TB, where the bacteria are present in the body but inactive, causing no symptoms and posing no risk to others. Others develop active TB, which does cause symptoms and can be passed on.
In Australia, TB is not as common as it is in many other parts of the world, but it does still occur. Each year, a few hundred cases are diagnosed across the country. TB is more commonly diagnosed in people who were born overseas, particularly those who have come from countries where TB is more widespread, as well as in some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. People with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV or taking certain medications, may also have a higher risk.
The good news is that TB is treatable. Standard treatment involves taking a course of antibiotics, which usually lasts several months. Because the bacteria can be stubborn, a combination of different antibiotic medicines is typically used together rather than just one. It is generally very important that the full course of treatment is completed, even if a person starts to feel better earlier, to make sure the bacteria are fully cleared. In Australia, TB treatment and monitoring are usually managed by specialist public health or infectious disease services, and support is available to help people through the process.

Advocacy and support in Australia
Organisations that can offer information, support, or connection for Tuberculosis. Where more than one is listed, they serve different needs or regions, so choose whichever fits your situation.
There's no dedicated Australian organisation for tuberculosis. It's managed mainly through state and territory TB services instead.
This is a starting point, not medical advice or an endorsement. Contact details change; search the organisation name to find its current website.
