Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are between 18 and 69 years old
- People who are largely inactive, doing less than 90 minutes of exercise per week (as measured by a standard activity questionnaire)
- People with a body mass index (BMI) above 25 kg/m² (a measure of body weight relative to height)
- People who have had a liver tissue sample (biopsy) taken within the past six months showing a specific type of liver disease called NASH (a form of fatty liver disease with inflammation), with a severity score above 4 on a standard medical scale
- People whose liver scan shows more than 5% fat in the liver
- People whose liver biopsy shows liver scarring (fibrosis) at stages 1 through 3 out of 4
Who may not be able to join:
- People who currently have active heart or cardiac symptoms
- People with a BMI above 45 kg/m²
- People who currently have active cancer
- People who are unable to walk more than two city blocks
- People who are currently living in an institution or who are prisoners
- People who have another type of liver disease (other than NASH)
- People who are pregnant
- People whose fatty liver is caused by something other than NASH (confirm with trial site)
- People with serious other health conditions (confirm with trial site)
- People whose responses to a standard alcohol questionnaire indicate significant alcohol use
- People who currently use substances or smoke
- People whose diabetes is not well controlled — including those whose diabetes medication dose has changed in the past three months, or whose blood sugar level (HbA1c) is above 9%
- People whose activity questionnaire responses suggest that exercise may not be safe for them
