Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with suspected glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis):
- You are willing to give your signed consent to take part
- A doctor has confirmed you have a current EBV (Epstein-Barr virus) infection for the first time
- You have symptoms consistent with glandular fever, such as tiredness, headache, fever, sore throat, or swollen glands in the neck, along with blood test results that support this diagnosis
- Your blood tests show a specific pattern indicating a new EBV infection (confirm with trial site)
For people in the comparison (control) group:
- You are willing to give your signed consent to take part
- You have symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection, such as a sore throat, cough, runny nose, tiredness, headache, or swollen neck glands
- OR you have been confirmed to have a first-time CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection — a related viral illness
Who may not be able to join:
- People in the control group who are suspected or diagnosed with glandular fever by their doctor (though they may be able to join the glandular fever group later if EBV infection is confirmed)
- People who have a weakened immune system, either due to a medical condition or because they take immune-suppressing medications (such as steroids at a certain dose or higher) (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a history of an autoimmune disease, such as lupus or vasculitis
