Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have served in the U.S. military, Reserve, or National Guard
- People who are at least 18 years old
- People whose sleep study results show a certain level of breathing disruptions during sleep (an AHI of 5 or more per hour)
- People who have experienced a traumatic event at any point in their life (childhood or adulthood), at least one month after the trauma occurred
- People who have a current diagnosis of a substance use disorder, with substance use on at least 20 out of the last 90 days
- People who have a full diagnosis of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), confirmed through a clinical assessment
- People who are able to read and communicate in English
- People who are currently enrolled in the SARRTP unit's PTSD treatment track (confirm with trial site)
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose sleep problems are caused primarily by central sleep apnea (a specific type of breathing disruption during sleep), where more than half of their breathing pauses are of that type
- People who arrive at the treatment unit already using a PAP breathing device (though people previously diagnosed with sleep apnea who are not currently using a PAP device may still be eligible)
- People whose medical history or physical examination leads the unit's medical staff to advise against participation
- People with a history of significant memory or thinking difficulties, based on a cognitive screening test score below 26
- People with a history of psychosis (such as hallucinations or delusions) or mania that is not related to substance use
