Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who have been newly diagnosed with a specific type of head and neck cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) affecting the oropharynx, larynx, or hypopharynx, at certain stages as defined by medical staging systems.
- People whose cancer diagnosis has been confirmed through a tissue sample (biopsy).
- People who have had appropriate imaging of the neck, including a CT or MRI scan and a PET scan, showing no cancer spread to lymph nodes on the opposite side of the neck.
- People for whom a specialist head and neck cancer team has recommended radiation therapy (with or without chemotherapy) with the aim of curing the cancer — and if chemotherapy is included, it must be a platinum-based type.
- People whose cancer type and location means that radiation to lymph nodes on both sides of the neck is recommended, according to Dutch treatment guidelines.
- People for whom the surgical and imaging procedures involved in the trial are considered technically possible by a head and neck surgeon.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer has come back, or who have previously had cancer treatment to the head or neck area, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy (with a limited exception for a specific type of minor throat laser surgery).
- People whose cancer is positioned in a way that means radiation to only one side of the neck — or no lymph node radiation at all — is needed, according to Dutch treatment guidelines.
- People receiving a type of cancer drug that is not platinum-based (for example, cetuximab) alongside their radiation therapy.
- People who are eligible for proton therapy and wish to receive that treatment instead.
- People who have a blocked or compromised airway, or who have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube in the throat).
- People who have had another active invasive cancer within the past three years, with certain exceptions for very early-stage skin cancers or a specific early-stage prostate cancer finding.
- People who have physical, psychological, social, family, or geographic circumstances that may make it difficult to follow the trial procedures or attend follow-up appointments.
