Who might be able to join this trial:
Prospective (forward-looking) part of the study:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who are scheduled to have surgery to remove a brain tumor
- People for whom a pre-surgery brain scan using fMRI (a type of imaging that shows brain activity) is already planned as part of their standard care
- People for whom a procedure called direct cortical stimulation — where the surgeon gently stimulates areas of the brain during surgery to map important functions — is already planned as part of their standard care
Retrospective (historical records) part of the study:
- People aged 18 or older whose past pre-surgery fMRI brain scans are held at MD Anderson Cancer Center (from May 2004 onwards)
- People whose past fMRI records included at least one scan where the person performed a task during the scan
Who may not be able to join:
Prospective part:
- People who are not able to give informed consent to participate
- People who are not able to have an MRI scan
- People whose planned scans involve speech tasks only, and who a clinical neuropsychologist has assessed as being unable to complete any of those speech tasks
Retrospective part:
- People whose past fMRI scans were too affected by head movement during scanning (moving more than 2 mm or rotating more than 2 degrees) to be usable
- People whose past scans involved speech tasks only, and who a clinical neuropsychologist assessed as unable to complete any of those speech tasks
