Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with cancer on one side of the throat (tonsil, base of tongue, soft palate, or throat wall) that does not cross or touch the middle of the throat.
  • Your cancer may be HPV-positive or HPV-negative.
  • Your cancer is at an early to intermediate stage with no spread to distant parts of the body, and any affected lymph nodes in the neck are on the same side as the cancer and no larger than 6cm.
  • You have had recent scans (within 8 weeks of joining) including a CT or MRI of the neck, a PET-CT scan, and a chest CT scan.
  • Your treatment plan includes radiation therapy to both sides of the neck (with or without chemotherapy).
  • You are well enough to carry out daily activities, or have only mild limitations (confirm with trial site).
  • You are willing to fill out quality-of-life questionnaires if available in a language you understand.
  • You are able to attend all treatment and follow-up appointments.
  • Radiation therapy can begin within about 6 weeks of being enrolled in the trial.
  • If you are able to have children, you have agreed to use a reliable form of contraception.
  • You have had, or currently have, another cancer that is unlikely to affect this trial's treatment or results.
  • You are willing to provide a stored tumour tissue sample for research testing.
  • You have given your informed consent before joining the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your cancer is a small early-stage tumour (T1–T2) confined only to the tonsil area with either no spread to lymph nodes or only one small lymph node less than 3cm with no spread beyond the node.
  • You previously had your tonsil or the base of your tongue fully removed, or have no visible remaining cancer after a previous tonsil removal procedure.
  • You have had a previous head and neck cancer, or currently have more than one head and neck cancer at the same time.
  • You have already received chemotherapy before this treatment (induction or neo-adjuvant chemotherapy).
  • You have previously had radiation therapy to the head or neck, or had extensive surgery to remove lymph nodes on either side of the neck (at least 3 levels of nodes removed).
  • You have a known allergy to the radioactive tracer used in the imaging procedure.
  • You have serious active health conditions, including: a lung condition requiring a hospital stay in the last 30 days; unstable chest pain or heart failure requiring a hospital stay in the last 30 days; a heart attack in the last 30 days; or a condition such as scleroderma that prevents you from safely receiving radiation therapy.
