Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a Veteran aged 18 or older who has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease (kidney failure) and either will soon need to start regular dialysis, or have been on hemodialysis for no longer than 8 weeks at one of the six participating VA centers.
- You meet specific medical criteria related to kidney function, including producing more than half a liter of urine per day and having a certain level of remaining kidney function (confirm with trial site for full details).
- You are willing to be randomly assigned to either 2 or 3 dialysis sessions per week and follow whichever schedule you are assigned.
- You are willing to attend check-up appointments at the dialysis unit or by video/phone call, scheduled mostly alongside your regular dialysis visits.
- You agree to monthly (or more frequent) check-ins and interviews throughout the study, regardless of which dialysis schedule you are assigned to.
- You meet at least 5 out of 9 additional medical criteria related to incremental dialysis eligibility (confirm with trial site for full details).
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a serious terminal illness, such as advanced (stage 4) cancer that has spread, or you have entered hospice care, with a life expectancy of less than 6 months.
- Your blood potassium level was found to be too high (above 6.0 mEq/L) at any point in the 4 weeks before the study was set to begin.
