Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed (using a formal clinical interview) with one of the following as your main condition: panic disorder (with or without fear of open spaces), social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Your anxiety symptoms are rated at 8 or higher on a standard anxiety measurement scale, indicating a meaningful level of anxiety and impact on daily life.
- You are between 18 and 70 years old.
- You are willing and able to give your informed agreement to participate and follow the study's requirements.
- You are fluent in English, as the assessment tools used in this study have only been tested and validated in English.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or a psychotic disorder, or you have had a substance use problem (not including tobacco/nicotine) or an eating disorder within the past 6 months, or you have significant memory or thinking difficulties.
- You are currently having thoughts of suicide with some intention to act on them, or you have made a suicide attempt or taken preparatory steps toward suicide in the past 6 months.
- You have certain medical conditions that make breathing exercises involving carbon dioxide or deliberate overbreathing unsafe — for example, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, asthma, lung scarring, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or a history of stroke.
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are already receiving talk therapy (psychotherapy) aimed at treating your main anxiety condition.
- You have started a new psychiatric medication within the 8 weeks before your screening appointment (if you have been on a stable medication regimen for longer than this, you may still be eligible).
