How these figures are counted
  • Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
  • Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
  • Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
  • Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a mental health condition where a person experiences unwanted, recurring thoughts, images, or urges that feel distressing and difficult to control. These are called obsessions. To try to manage the anxiety or discomfort these thoughts cause, a person often feels driven to carry out certain behaviours or mental rituals, known as compulsions. Common examples might include repeatedly checking that a door is locked, washing hands many times, or mentally counting through certain sequences. The compulsions might bring temporary relief, but the cycle tends to continue. OCD is not a personality quirk or a sign of weakness — it is a recognised condition that affects how the brain processes certain thoughts and responses.

OCD is more common than many people realise. In Australia, it is estimated to affect around 2 to 3 in every 100 people at some point in their lives, meaning hundreds of thousands of Australians are living with this condition. It can appear at any age, though it often first shows up in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. It affects people of all backgrounds, genders, and walks of life. Family members and carers are often significantly affected too, as supporting someone with OCD can be demanding and sometimes confusing.

The good news is that OCD is a well-researched condition and effective treatments exist. In Australia, care is generally provided through mental health professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists. Treatment commonly involves a type of talking therapy, as well as medication in some cases, and the two are sometimes used together. Many people who receive appropriate support see meaningful improvement in their symptoms over time. A GP is usually a good starting point for getting a referral to the right kind of care.

Advocacy and support in Australia

Organisations that can offer information, support, or connection for OCD. Where more than one is listed, they serve different needs or regions, so choose whichever fits your situation.

No Australian organisation focuses specifically on OCD. SANE Australia and Beyond Blue both cover it as part of their broader mental health support.
