  • Both biological parents are of Han Chinese nationality
  • People aged 16 to 65 years old
  • People who have been clinically diagnosed with a depressive episode of major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD), based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria
  • People who have not taken any immune-modifying medications in the month before joining the trial
  • People who have had no known infections of the respiratory tract, urinary system, or digestive system in the month before joining the trial

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who meet DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia-related conditions, neurodevelopmental disorders, dementia, memory problems, or other cognitive impairments
  • People whose mental health condition is caused by substance use (such as alcohol or drugs), or people who have serious physical or immune system conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver or kidney problems, or autoimmune diseases
  • People who have taken psychiatric medications (such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or mood stabilisers) in the month before joining the trial
  • People who have previously received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a treatment that uses electrical stimulation to the brain
  • People who currently have serious thoughts or behaviours related to suicide, or who are experiencing severe agitation
  • People who are unable to follow medical instructions and do not have a guardian to assist them
  • People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
  • People for whom an MRI scan would not be safe (confirm with trial site)
  • People the researchers determine to be unsuitable for any other reason (confirm with trial site)
