Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are able to understand the study information and are willing to sign a consent form
  • People aged 18 to 75 years old
  • People of any gender
  • People who have a good level of physical functioning, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool called the Karnofsky Performance Scale (score of 80 or above)
  • People whose liver, kidney, and blood test results are within acceptable ranges as defined by the trial (confirm with trial site for specific values)
  • People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx (a type of throat cancer), confirmed by laboratory testing of tissue
  • People whose cancer has been assessed and classified as a specific stage — T1/2 N2/3 M0 — meaning the main tumour is relatively small but has spread to nearby lymph nodes, with no distant spread, according to a standard cancer staging system
  • People whose cancer in the lymph nodes is considered surgically removable (the tumour has not fully wrapped around a major blood vessel in the neck)
  • People whose tumour can be measured and tracked using standard imaging guidelines
  • People whose treatment goal is to aim for a cure rather than symptom control only
  • People who are able and willing to use effective contraception throughout the study and for at least 6 months after the last dose of chemotherapy, if there is any possibility of pregnancy — or people who are confirmed to have no possibility of pregnancy due to surgery, medically confirmed loss of ovarian function, or being post-menopausal (defined as at least 12 consecutive months without a period, confirmed by a blood test)
  • People who are likely to follow the study requirements consistently

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body
  • People who have had another type of cancer in the past, or who currently have a second cancer at the same time
  • People who have already received any treatment for this throat cancer, including radiation therapy, surgery (other than a biopsy), chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy
  • People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the month before this study
  • People who are considered unlikely to tolerate the initial chemotherapy treatment well
  • People whose doctor believes it would be unsafe for them to participate — for example, due to serious medical conditions such as immune-related gut inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, lung inflammation, or lung scarring, or due to mental health conditions including recent or active thoughts of self-harm (within the past year)
  • People whose treatment goal is focused on managing symptoms rather than aiming for a cure
  • People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
