Who might be able to join this trial:

For Veterans:

  • You are a Veteran who has had thoughts of killing yourself in the past month and/or made a suicide attempt in the past 3 months
  • You have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, a psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, or a mood disorder with psychotic features
  • You are able to understand and agree to participate in the study, as confirmed by a brief assessment

For Peer Specialists:

  • You are a Certified Peer Specialist currently working at VA San Diego Healthcare System in the Mental Health Care Line
  • You have 2 to 3 years of experience working as a Certified Peer Specialist after getting your certification
  • You are interested in being trained in the SUPPORT program used in this study
  • You are willing to allow research staff to speak with your direct supervisor about your participation
  • Your direct supervisor agrees to let you participate, including allowing time for a full day of training, weekly one-hour group supervision sessions, and working with at least one Veteran through the program at a time

Who may not be able to join:

For Veterans:

  • You are unable to complete the study assessments for any reason
  • You are currently intoxicated and need immediate detox treatment, or you are being directed to a residential substance use program (rather than mental health services)
  • You need to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital right away
