Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 18 and 60 years old (male or female)
- People who have not intentionally tried to lose weight in the past 6 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who use tobacco products at a level above "Very Low Dependence" on a standard nicotine dependence scale (a score greater than 2 on the Fagerstrom Test)
- People with diabetes, including those with high fasting blood sugar or HbA1c levels on lab tests, or a history of type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- People with certain hormonal or gland-related conditions, such as a history of Cushing's disease, pituitary gland disorders, or an underactive or overactive thyroid, or abnormal thyroid levels on a blood test
- People with lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other lung disease that could make it difficult to follow the study plan
- People with a history of heart-related conditions, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, irregular heart rhythms, or peripheral artery disease
- People with high blood pressure, whether previously diagnosed and currently being treated, or found to be above 140/90 mmHg at screening
- People with liver disease, including a history of cirrhosis or active hepatitis B or C, or abnormal liver enzyme levels on screening blood tests
- People with kidney disease, including elevated creatinine levels or reduced kidney function on blood tests
- People with a history of brain or nervous system conditions, such as stroke, dementia, or neurodegenerative disorders
- People with a history of cancer requiring treatment in the past five years (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
- People with a history of active tuberculosis, HIV, chronic coccidioidomycosis, or other ongoing chronic infections
- People with a score of 8 or more on a standard alcohol use screening questionnaire, which may indicate problem drinking
- People currently using illegal drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, or heroin (marijuana use is permitted)
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who are in or past menopause, or who have an irregular menstrual cycle
- People who weigh 450 lb (approximately 204 kg) or more, due to equipment weight limits
- People who are unable to speak or read English
- People who are unable to give informed consent to participate
- People with psychological conditions including (but not limited to) claustrophobia, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, or other mental health conditions that could make safe participation difficult
- People currently taking medications, dietary supplements, or using alternative therapies known to affect the body's energy use or metabolism
- People who are unable to eat the meals provided in the study, or who cannot consume at least 95% of the calories provided
