Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are suspected to have acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that has not yet been treated.
- People who are 18 years of age or older.
- People who have not yet received any anti-cancer treatment for AML or MDS (a medication called hydroxyurea to control white blood cell counts is allowed, as is a medication called cytarabine at a limited dose for urgent use).
- People who have previously used certain medications — including hydroxyurea, ATRA, certain targeted therapies, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, or lenalidomide — for no more than one month in total.

- People who agree to have certain biological samples (such as blood or tissue) collected and submitted for research purposes.
- People who have been fully informed about the nature of the study and have signed a consent form agreeing to take part.
- People enrolled at a participating site that either has relevant treatment sub-studies open, or is willing to manage care through an alternative pathway or arrange transfer to another site (confirm with trial site).
Who may not be able to join:
- People with AML who have a history of previously treated myeloproliferative neoplasms (a related type of blood condition) or previously treated MDS.
- People who are currently receiving any treatment containing cytarabine beyond the limited urgent-use dose described above.
- People who have another cancer that currently requires active anti-cancer treatment (hormonal therapy for another condition is allowed).
- People who previously used any of the listed medications for longer than one month.
- People who are currently taking hydroxyurea and are not willing to stop it within 24 hours before beginning trial treatment.
