Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are overweight or obese (a body mass index of 25 or higher)
- People who work in a desk-based job where at least 75% of their workday (8 hours or more) is spent sitting, whether at home or in an office
- People who are considered "at risk" for diabetes, which means either having prediabetes (a specific blood sugar or HbA1c reading in the borderline range), OR having one or more of the following risk factors in addition to being overweight: being 45 years of age or older; having a parent or sibling with diabetes; being physically inactive (no regular structured exercise); having a history of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol/triglycerides; or identifying as African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have an established heart condition, such as a history of heart attack, a coronary stent, bypass surgery, a heart transplant, or angina (chest pain from the heart)
- People who have been diagnosed with heart failure or a disease affecting the heart muscle
- People who have been diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation, usually in the legs)
- People who already have diabetes — indicated by a specific blood sugar reading, or currently taking diabetes medications or insulin
- People who have a long-term musculoskeletal problem affecting the lower body, such as arthritis in the knees or hips, or who regularly use a walking aid such as a cane or walker
- People who have nerve damage (neuropathy) of any kind
- People who have a history of fainting or dizziness when standing up
- People who work at a given office or home location fewer than 4 days per week
- People who currently use a standing desk for work
- People who have used tobacco products within the past 12 months
- People who currently use illicit drugs, or who drink more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week (for women) or more than 28 per week (for men)
- People who use steroid medications for 21 days or more per year
- People with a fasting triglyceride (a type of blood fat) level of 500 mg/dL or higher
- People who have a thyroid condition
- People with high blood pressure that is not controlled or not being treated (above 150/90 mmHg)
- People who are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months
- People with an LDL cholesterol level of 190 mg/dL or higher
- People who are currently on a diet, enrolled in a weight loss program, or planning to join one in the next 6 months
- People who do not speak English
