Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People whose kidneys are working at a reduced but not severely low level (a specific kidney function test score between 25 and 60, which a doctor can measure)
- People who have been on stable, unchanged doses of water pills (diuretics) and/or certain blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors or ARBs)
- People whose heart scans and/or exercise breathing tests show signs of a specific type of early-stage heart condition where the heart pumps normally but does not relax properly, without yet having obvious symptoms
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have diabetes or have had it in the past
- People who have had a procedure to open blocked heart arteries within the last 6 months
- People who have a significant problem with one or more of their heart valves
- People who have serious lung disease that requires them to use oxygen at home
- People who experience chest pain (angina)
- People who have reduced blood flow to the heart muscle that has not been treated with a procedure
- People whose blood pressure is below 100 or above 180 mmHg
- People who are pregnant
- People who already have noticeable symptoms of heart failure
- People who have a history of certain whole-body diseases known to cause heart problems, such as amyloidosis or sarcoidosis
- People who have a physical condition affecting their muscles or joints that would prevent them from completing heart and exercise tests
- People who currently have active cancer
- People who are taking medications that suppress the immune system
- People whose heart scans show that their heart's pumping strength is below a certain level (ejection fraction under 50%)
- People who are currently taking a type of diabetes/kidney medication known as an SGLT2 inhibitor
- People who have had an allergic reaction to an SGLT2 inhibitor
- People who have a pre-existing liver condition
- People whose liver blood test results are more than three times higher than the normal range (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a history of frequent urinary tract infections, or who have had a urinary tract infection in the last 3 months
