Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who have been confirmed by biopsy to have invasive squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer) located on the tongue or the inner cheek lining (buccal mucosa)
- People whose tumour is classified as T1 or T2 in size, according to a standard cancer staging system (the AJCC TNM 8th edition)
- People whose cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, based on physical examination and imaging
- People whose tumour can be removed through the mouth, without the need for external surgery
- People who have not yet received any treatment for this cancer
- People who do not have cancer at any other location in the body
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had previous surgery in the head or neck area
- People whose lesion is located on the upper gum (upper alveolus) or the roof of the mouth (palate)
- People who have large areas of mixed-appearance leukoplakia (white patches in the mouth) or other precancerous conditions
- People who have had a previous cancer in the head or neck region
- People whose treatment would require a complex reconstruction procedure using tissue transferred from another part of the body (known as a free flap reconstruction)
