Who might be able to join this trial:
- People of any gender identity, race, or ethnicity who are 21 years of age or older
- People who report having 2 or more heavy drinking episodes in the past 30 days (defined as 4 or more drinks within 2 hours for women, or 5 or more drinks within 2 hours for men), and who have drunk at least as much alcohol as the amount that would be given during the study session
- Couples where at least one partner reports at least one instance of physical violence between partners in their current relationship
- People who agree not to drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day after their study visit (the trial will arrange transport if needed)
- For half of the couples taking part, at least one partner will need to meet the criteria for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) or a milder form of PTSD, as assessed by the trial team (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who meet the clinical criteria for a drug use disorder (other than caffeine or nicotine) — note that recent recreational drug use such as cannabis is generally acceptable
- People who meet the clinical criteria for severe alcohol use disorder — this applies specifically to those who would be receiving alcohol as part of the study
- People with a current or past diagnosis of a psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder
- People who are currently experiencing thoughts of suicide or harming others
- People with a current or past psychiatric or medical condition that means drinking alcohol would be medically unsafe for them
- People who weigh more than 250 pounds — this applies specifically to those who would be receiving alcohol as part of the study
- People taking certain medications, including lithium, methadone, alpha or beta blockers, or cholinergic/anticholinergic drugs, that could interfere with heart rate and cardiovascular measurements during the study — this applies specifically to those who would be receiving alcohol as part of the study (confirm with trial site for specific medications)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have experienced severe or one-sided (where only one partner is violent) partner violence in the past 6 months
