Who might be able to join this trial:
For patients:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have recently started, or are expected to start within the next 12 weeks, regular in-centre haemodialysis (a type of kidney dialysis done at a clinic) due to kidney failure
- People who have had no more than 36 haemodialysis sessions (roughly 12 weeks of treatment) at the time they are approached about the study
- People whose kidneys are clearing very little urea (a waste product) from the blood — specifically less than 2.0 mL/min (confirm with trial site)
- People who are still producing at least 500 mL of urine per day (roughly 2 cups)
For caregivers:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who are the patient's main caregiver, as chosen by the patient
- People who are a close family member of the patient, such as a spouse, child, sibling, parent, or grandchild
- People who do not have any known psychiatric or neurological conditions
- People who are not part of a medical or healthcare team
- People who are not already caring for another person with a long-term illness
- People who have not experienced a major life event in the 3 months before joining the study
Who may not be able to join:
For patients:
- People with certain abnormal blood levels before dialysis — specifically potassium at or above 5.8, sodium at or below 125, or bicarbonate at or below 17 (confirm with trial site for what these numbers mean for eligibility)
- People who require, or are expected to require, large amounts of fluid removal during dialysis
- People who are unwilling or unable to follow the study's requirements for any reason
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People whose treating doctor expects them to survive less than 6 months, switch to a different type of dialysis, or transfer to another centre within 6 months
