Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 21 and 26 years old
- In the past year, you have had at least 4 drinks (if male) or at least 3 drinks (if female) on a single occasion
- You are in a stable, balanced mood at the time of joining the study
- (For people with bipolar disorder only) You have been formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, confirmed through a structured interview using standard diagnostic guidelines
- (For people with bipolar disorder only) You have been on a stable medication routine for at least 4 weeks
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a history of a serious medical illness, especially one that may have affected your brain
- You have a neurological condition, or have had a significant head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for 5 minutes or more
- Your IQ score is below 85
- You have a medical reason that means you cannot have an MRI scan
- You are currently pregnant
- You currently have a moderate-to-severe problem with cannabis (marijuana) use
- You have a history of severe alcohol use disorder
- You scored above 15 on a standard alcohol use screening questionnaire (called the AUDIT)
- You have ever taken part in a treatment program focused on stopping drinking completely
- You have reported wanting to quit drinking but feeling unable to
- You have any medical, religious, or personal reason that prevents you from drinking alcohol
- You have a history of heart attack, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or liver disease
- You have ever had a bad reaction to alcoholic drinks
- You have not had 4 drinks (if male) or 3 drinks (if female) on a single occasion in the past year
- You are not willing to have a friend or family member drive you home after sessions where alcohol is given
- In the past year, you have had a diagnosed problem with a substance other than alcohol, cannabis, or nicotine
- (For healthy participants with no psychiatric diagnosis only) You have ever been hospitalised for a psychiatric or mental health reason
- (For healthy participants only) You have a lifetime history of a neurodevelopmental, mood, psychotic, or eating disorder
- (For healthy participants only) You have taken psychiatric medications for more than one month total in your lifetime
