Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 years or older
  • People whose primary cancer is located in the oropharynx (which includes the tonsil, soft palate, base of the tongue, and the side and back walls of the throat)
  • People whose cancer has been confirmed by laboratory testing to be squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of cancer cell)
  • People whose tumour has tested either positive or negative for a protein marker called P16
  • People whose cancer was treated with a surgical technique called TORS (robotic surgery through the mouth), with or without additional therapy afterward
  • People whose cancer was classified as an early stage (pT1 or pT2) at the time of surgery
  • People who had their TORS surgery on or before 31st December 2021

For a specific part of the study only (exploratory analysis):

  • People who are able to give consent to having their tissue samples analysed at a molecular level
  • People who are able to give consent to having their scans and imaging data used for research (this applies particularly to participants at international centres)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose cancer was classified as a more advanced stage (T3 or T4)
  • People who had TORS surgery performed for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment of a returned cancer, or comfort/palliative care rather than curative treatment
  • People who have had a previous head and neck cancer, or who have received radiation therapy to the head and neck area at any point in the past
  • People who are known to have cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body
  • People whose cancer originated in the nasopharynx, thyroid, or skin, or whose cancer is not a squamous cell carcinoma type
