Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are female
- People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher (this means a higher body weight relative to height)
- People whose knee shows no signs of arthritis on both X-ray and MRI scans
- People who have no knee pain, or knee pain on fewer than 15 days per month, in the knee being studied
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have symptomatic or severe heart artery disease
- People who are unable to walk without a walking aid or device
- People who are blind
- People who have type 1 diabetes
- People currently receiving treatment for cancer
- People who have had a knee fracture, or an ACL, MCL, or meniscus injury (with or without surgery) in the past 12 months
- People who have had an injection into the knee in the past 6 months
- People who have arthritis in both knees, as shown by X-ray or MRI scans
- People who have frequent pain in both knees on more than 15 days per month
- People with a BMI below 30
- People who are male
- People who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces, such as an MRI machine)
- People for whom MRI scanning is not safe — for example, those weighing over 300 pounds, or whose knee does not fit the MRI equipment
- People who are unwilling or unable to make changes to their eating and physical activity habits due to their environment
- People who cannot speak and read English
- People who are planning to be away from the area for more than 2 months at any point during the 48-month study period
