Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 85 years old who are having a major spinal surgery, such as a fusion connecting many levels of the spine down to the pelvis, a surgery that removes and reshapes bone in the spine, or any major spinal correction surgery where the surgeon expects to remove and discard a large amount of bone material.
- People who are willing and able to give their informed consent to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- People with end stage kidney failure.
- People with any history of cancer.
- People who have relied on a wheelchair for 70% or more of their movement for longer than 12 months.
- People who have complete paralysis of both arms and legs, or both legs, due to a spinal cord injury.
- People who are currently taking medication to treat epilepsy.
- People with confirmed Marfan syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), or other inherited conditions known to affect how bones form.
- People who have been taking steroid medications (such as prednisone or cortisone) continuously for more than 3 months, or for a total of more than 6 months over their lifetime.
- People who currently have, or are suspected to have, an infection involving spinal hardware or implants.
- People who are HIV-positive or Hepatitis C-positive, or who are currently taking antiviral medications.
- People who have had gastric bypass surgery, or who have lost more than 100 pounds in weight.
- People with a condition causing overactive parathyroid glands (a gland that controls calcium in the body), whether caused by the glands themselves or by another condition.
- People with Paget's disease of bone (a condition that disrupts normal bone rebuilding).
