Who might be able to join this trial:
- People of any gender identity, race, or ethnicity who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
- People who are able to understand English
- People who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder in the past month, based on standard diagnostic guidelines (meeting 4 or more criteria)
- People who have had at least 3 to 4 heavy drinking days per week in the last 30 days, or who have drunk heavily for at least 2 weeks in the past month — with specific drink thresholds depending on gender (confirm with trial site for exact numbers)
- People who have been diagnosed with PTSD in the past month, assessed using a specific structured clinical interview called the CAPS-5
- People who also have a mood disorder (other than bipolar disorder) or an anxiety disorder, as these conditions commonly occur alongside alcohol use disorder and PTSD
- People who also use other substances, as long as alcohol is their main substance of concern
- People who are already taking psychiatric medications, provided the dose has been stable for at least 4 weeks before the study begins
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a current or past history of a psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder, or who are at immediate risk of harming themselves or others
- People who have started a new psychiatric medication within the past 4 weeks
- People currently experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, indicated by a score above 8 on a standard withdrawal scale called the CIWA-Ar (these individuals may be re-evaluated after completing a medically supervised detox program)
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are currently enrolled in a structured, evidence-based treatment program specifically for alcohol use disorder or PTSD (attendance at other activities such as Alcoholics Anonymous will be monitored throughout the study)
