Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are between 16 and 50 years old
- People who have been newly diagnosed with a type of blood cancer called ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia)
- People whose ALL does not have a specific genetic marker called the Philadelphia chromosome
- People who have not yet received treatment for their ALL, except for certain limited medications (hydroxyurea, corticosteroids, or chemotherapy given directly into the spinal fluid)
- People whose bone marrow or blood tests show 20% or more abnormal white blood cells (called lymphoblasts)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a specific type of leukemia called Burkitt leukemia
- People who have had a prior bone marrow or blood disorder called myeloproliferative disease
- People whose tests show the Philadelphia chromosome is present (detected by any testing method)
- People whose general health and ability to function is significantly limited (confirm with trial site)
- People whose liver function tests show bilirubin levels more than twice the normal upper limit
- People whose liver enzyme levels (transaminases) are more than five times the normal upper limit
- People whose kidney function test (creatinine) result is above 2.5 mg/dl
- People who test positive for HIV or HTLV infections
- People who have a significant level of heart failure (classified as NYHA Class III or IV)
- People who have a severe psychiatric condition that would make it difficult to follow the trial requirements
- People who have previously received intravenous (drip) chemotherapy
- People who do not wish to participate in the study
- People who have Down syndrome
