Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have given their informed consent to take part
- People whose ultrasound scan shows a single cancerous thyroid nodule that is no larger than 1cm at its widest point, and is at least 2mm away from the outer layer of the thyroid
- People with no sign that the cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the neck or to areas outside the thyroid gland
- People whose thyroid cancer (papillary thyroid carcinoma) has been confirmed by a fine needle biopsy
- People who do not meet the nodule size and position criteria above, but who have been fully informed of the risks, have strongly requested thermal ablation treatment, and whose treating doctor has assessed that thermal ablation is technically possible for them
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have another type of cancer that their doctor has assessed as not suitable for ablation treatment
- People whose health means they cannot safely undergo surgery
- People who have cognitive difficulties or other conditions that prevent them from accurately completing thyroid-related questionnaires
