Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 21 and 45 years old and occasionally drink alcohol (at least 1 drink per month), OR between 18 and 45 years old and have not had any alcohol in the last 6 months
- You drink at least 1 alcoholic drink per month (for most volunteers) or have had at least 1 drink in the last 3 months (for those with Fanconi anemia)
- You meet one of these three profiles: (1) a healthy volunteer without Eastern Asian ancestry who has a specific gene type called ALDH2*1/1, (2) a healthy volunteer of Eastern Asian ancestry who has a gene type called ALDH2*1/2 and experiences facial flushing when drinking alcohol, or (3) you have been diagnosed with Fanconi anemia (confirm with trial site)
- You have smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in your entire lifetime
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are taking any medication or substance that could affect how your body processes alcohol, or that could be affected by drinking alcohol
- You are a healthy volunteer who has taken antibiotics in the last 3 months
- You currently drink more than 21 alcoholic drinks per week
- You have a history of problems related to alcohol or drug use
- You currently use or have previously used tobacco or nicotine products of any kind
- You have used cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, or marijuana regularly in the last year
- You have tried or occasionally used any nicotine products or marijuana in the last month
- You currently have an active infection such as a cold, flu, COVID-19, or a sinus or respiratory infection (joining may be delayed until you recover)
- You are a non-Fanconi anemia volunteer with an unstable health condition or one that could be worsened by alcohol, such as insulin-dependent diabetes, ulcers, or heart problems
- You experience serious reactions such as nausea or blacking out even when drinking only small amounts of alcohol
