Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 80 years of age who have chronic kidney disease at stage 3, 4, or 5, meaning their kidneys are working at less than 60% of normal capacity based on a recent blood test done outside of hospital.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose heart depends entirely on a pacemaker to beat
- People who are currently in prison
- People who are pregnant (a pregnancy test will be offered if there is any concern about pregnancy)
- People who are not able to give informed consent on their own
- People with a known disorder affecting the body's automatic functions, such as Parkinson's disease that has affected these automatic functions
- People with an implanted heart device (such as a defibrillator or pacemaker) that would prevent accurate measurement of heart rate patterns, or people with long-term atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm)
- People who have had a heart attack within the past four weeks
- People who are already on regular dialysis for kidney failure
- People who have epilepsy
- People taking a blood pressure medication called labetalol, as it interferes with certain measurements in the trial
- People who have diabetes
- Once at least half of the trial group is made up of people not taking beta blocker medications, additional people on beta blockers may not be able to join (confirm with trial site)
