Who might be able to join this trial:

For patients with a neuromuscular condition:

  • People with a confirmed genetic diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), or FKRP gene mutations, or a confirmed diagnosis of centronuclear myopathy (CNM) based on a muscle biopsy.
  • Patients with FSHD, DM1, CMT, or CNM who are still able to walk, or are at a stage where walking ability is changing.
  • Patients with DM1 or CMT who show signs affecting both sensation and movement during a physical examination.
  • Patients with DMD or CNM who are under 20 years old, or patients with FSHD, CMT, or DM1 who are between 5 and 80 years old.
  • Patients with FKRP gene mutations who are older than 2 years.
  • DMD patients who cannot walk but are able to sit in a regular or wheelchair for at least one hour.
  • DMD patients who have been taking corticosteroid medication for at least 6 months, or who begin corticosteroid treatment at the start of the trial (except children under 4 years old).
  • Patients (or their parents or legal guardians, if the patient is a minor) who have signed the consent form agreeing to take part.

For healthy control participants:

  • Boys and girls who are able to walk and are under 20 years old.
  • Participants (or their parents or legal guardians, if the participant is a minor) who have signed the consent form agreeing to take part.

Who may not be able to join:

For patients with a neuromuscular condition:

  • Patients with severe cognitive difficulties that would make it hard to understand or follow the exercises involved in the trial.
  • Patients who have had surgery or a significant injury to their arms or legs within the past 6 months (applies to patients who can walk).
  • Patients who have had another ongoing or recent neurological, hormonal, infectious, allergic, or inflammatory condition in the 3 weeks before joining the trial.
  • Patients who are currently taking part in another clinical trial that involves a treatment or intervention.
  • DMD patients who are at a transitional stage of walking ability but are not currently taking corticosteroids.

For healthy control participants:

  • People who have had surgery or a significant injury to their arms or legs within the past 6 months.
  • Athletes who compete at a national level.
  • People who have had a muscle, neurological, infectious, or inflammatory condition in the 3 weeks before joining the trial.
  • People who have a bone, joint, or neurological condition that affects the way they walk.
