Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 21 and 60 years old
- In the past year, you have had at least 4 drinks (if male) or at least 3 drinks (if female) on at least two separate occasions
- If joining as a PTSD participant: you have been diagnosed with PTSD, confirmed through a structured interview
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a history of a serious medical illness, especially one that may have affected brain tissue
- You have a neurological condition, or have had a significant head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for 5 minutes or more
- Your IQ score is below 85 (confirm with trial site)
- You have any reason you cannot have an MRI scan (for example, a metal implant)
- You have a positive pregnancy test
- You have a severe alcohol use disorder
- You currently have a severe cannabis use disorder
- You currently have a substance use disorder involving any substance other than alcohol, cannabis, or nicotine
- You scored above 15 on a standard alcohol use screening questionnaire called the AUDIT
- You have ever been in a treatment program focused on stopping alcohol use completely
- You have said you want to quit drinking but feel unable to
- You have a medical, religious, or personal reason that prevents you from drinking alcohol
- You have a history of heart attack, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or liver disease
- You have had a bad reaction to alcoholic drinks in the past
- You have not had 4 drinks or more (men) or 3 drinks or more (women) on at least two occasions in the past year
- You are unwilling to have a friend or family member drive you home after sessions where alcohol is given
- If joining as a PTSD or intimate partner violence (IPV)-exposed participant: you have been on a medication for less than 4 weeks (meaning you need to be on a stable medication routine)
- If joining as a PTSD or IPV-exposed participant: you are currently having thoughts of suicide with intent to act
- If joining as an IPV-exposed but no PTSD participant: you have a history of PTSD
- If joining as a healthy comparison participant: you have ever been hospitalised for a psychiatric reason
- If joining as a healthy comparison participant: you have a lifetime history of a neurodevelopmental disorder, mood disorder, psychotic disorder, eating disorder, or a history of a suicide attempt
- If joining as a healthy comparison participant: you have taken psychiatric medication for more than one month total in your lifetime
