- You have been diagnosed with a specific type of cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) affecting the mouth, voice box, or throat area, confirmed by a tissue sample — with some exceptions for very early voice box cancers (confirm with trial site)
- You have already had surgery to remove the main tumor and nearby lymph nodes, performed in a specific standardized way
- Your doctors have recommended radiation therapy (with or without chemotherapy) after your surgery
- Any cancerous lymph nodes found are smaller than 6cm in size
- Cancerous lymph nodes are only found in up to 3 lymph node regions in the neck
- The cancer has not spread to other parts of the body
- You are 18 years of age or older (there is no upper age limit)
- You are generally well enough to carry out some daily activities (confirm with trial site what this means for you)
- You have read and understood what the trial involves and are able to follow the trial's instructions
- You have signed the trial's consent form before starting any trial-related treatment
- Your radiation therapy will start at least 6 weeks after your last cancer-related surgery
Who may not be able to join:
- Your surgery was unable to remove all visible tumor tissue
- Your cancer has spread to other parts of the body
- There are signs the cancer has come back between your surgery and the planned start of radiation therapy
- Cancerous lymph nodes are found in more than 3 lymph node regions in the neck
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are able to have children but are unwilling to use highly effective contraception during the treatment period
- You have any condition that might make it difficult for you to follow the trial's schedule or requirements
- You are currently taking part in another clinical treatment trial
- You have had any previous cancer treatment other than surgery for this cancer — such as radiotherapy to the head and neck area, or chemotherapy/immunotherapy before surgery
- You are unable to have both MRI and CT scans with contrast dye (for example, due to allergies or a pacemaker) (confirm with trial site)
- You had a neck dissection or head and neck surgery more than 2 months before starting radiation therapy that may have affected the lymph drainage in the area (confirm with trial site)
- You have had another type of cancer in the past, unless it was successfully treated with no signs of disease for at least 5 years, or was a certain type of non-aggressive skin cancer with no signs of disease
